What is friendship force?

Friendship Force is a non-profit organization focused on promoting understanding, cultural education and citizen diplomacy through homestay Journeys.  FF programs bring diverse people together who share one-of-a-kind experiences not available to regular tourists. While travel is a big part of Friendship Force, it is not a tour company or a travel club. It is a program of cultural exploration with a mission to break down barriers of language and culture.

When people open their hearts and homes to visitors from other countries and cultures true understanding can develop. Learning firsthand about traditions and culture through homestays, sharing meals and participating in family and community life worlds away from home leads to bonds of friendship that endure over time and despite distance.

Friendship Force Journeys are organized through a volunteer network of clubs and partners in more than 60 countries on six continents. More than 15,000 active members participate in more than 300 Journeys each year.

One of the best ways to promote global understanding across the barriers that separate people is to host an ambassador in your home. Show them your city or town, your community, and culture; and learn about theirs over meals, laughter, and shared experiences.

A brief history of The Friendship Force

Founded in 1977 with a single mission "To create an environment where individual friendship can be established across the international barriers that separate people"  The Friendship Force was founded by Wayne Smith and announced by President Jimmy Carter at a White House gathering of state governors. In 1992 the organization was a nominee for The Nobel Peace Prize for its work organizing the travel of goodwill ambassadors.

The Friendship Force Pledge

As a member of The Friendship Force I recognize that I can make a difference.  I recognize that I have a mission. That mission is to be a friend to the people of the world. As I embark on this adventure I know that others will be watching me. I know that through my example to my fellow citizens and the people of other nations the cause of friendship, love and peace can be furthered.

I can make a difference!
